Your Weekend Getaway Sorted
Chicago has a reputation for having some of the best music and interesting neighborhoods to discover. If you’re only in town for the weekend, we’ve got a few options for you to fill your time from morning till evening.
Explore The Neighborhoods
Chicago has more than 70 neighborhoods that are a melting pot of different cultures; all of which add to the feeling of being in another world from borough to borough. Devon Avenue, located between Ridge and McCormick has some of the best Indian and Middle-Eastern food, where Milwaukee Avenue will take you to Eastern Europe for some perogies and cabbage rolls. While you’re about, go to a local pub and have a drink with the locals. They’ll tell you more about their own backyard and recommend things to see and do.
Museums & Art
The most cost-effective way to check out the Field Museum and especially The Art Institute of Chicago would be to get a Chicago CityPASS. The benefits of this are endless, including admission to multiple attractions of your choice. Some options include VIP entry to exhibits as well as audio-guided tours. You can do as much or as little as you like with the Chicago CityPASS.
Catch A Show At The Second City or Improv Olympics
See where many of the comedy legends of our time got their start and get ready to laugh, cry and be raucously entertained at either venue. The Second City has a show on each weekend at 4 pm that showcases over 50 years of some of the most memorable and entertaining sketches, songs and improv performances.
If you fancy yourself a comedian in the making, why not test drive an improv class at The Second City. Drop-in on a Friday at 5:30 pm or Sunday at 7 pm, pay $20 entry, and practice your skills.
Spend An Afternoon At Promontory Point
The rugged and beautiful expanse of the man-made limestone embankment that pushes out to Lake Michigan, is a lovely place to spend an afternoon. While you are not necessarily permitted to swim there, you can explore the beaches and bird sanctuaries that feature along the lakeshore. With a marvelous view of downtown, it’s a great place to either escape the busyness of life or explore the Hyde Park neighborhood.
Check Out The Live Music Scene At Lincoln Hall
Since 2009, Lincoln Hall has established itself as one of the top venues for live music in Chicago. There’s something on almost every day of the week, including spectacular performances from the School of Rock. Remember the movie? Tickets to the School of Rock are only $8 in advance and $10 at the door (under 18s are free).
